Hi! I’m Julie, and this winter I’m training to run my first marathon. I was selected to run in the 2017 Boston Marathon as a charity runner in support of the Trinity Boston Foundation. Their programs provide academic mentoring, leadership development, and health and wellness programming, which lead to increased high school graduation and college-going rates. I’ve committed to raising $8000 to support a cause I care deeply about.
I chose to run for the Trinity Boston Foundation because I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible effects that community-based organizations can have on young people in urban areas. I have worked with students who participated in Sole Train, TBF’s half-marathon training program for Boston high school students, and I know that completing a seemingly impossible task, such as running 13.1 miles, can change a young person’s entire outlook about his or her future. I remember that feeling myself when I ran my first half in Gloucester in 2012.
In my career, I’ve always worked to empower others to lead their best lives and strive for better options through education and jobs they love. I’ve worked with hundreds of incredible people, youth and adults, in my roles at General Assembly, Posse, and Brandeis. Hearing their stories, and seeing how much they’ve accomplished in spite of so many challenges and disadvantages, has inspired me to reach far outside of my comfort zone and commit to 4 grueling months of training and fundraising.
In this blog, you’ll hear about my journey to the finish line on Boylston Street on Patriot’s Day, 2017. I write about training, fundraising, the Trinity Boston Foundation, and the students who’ve inspired me to do it all.
